Check out this deal: I go to Kohl's to buy a new Cuisinart coffee pot. First I check out ratings in Consumer Reports...no way I can go wrong with a Cuisinart...they are the highest rated in every category...even the "Keurig-type" category....Keurig is actually WAAAAY down the list. Cuisinart is the tops.

But I digress:

I go to Kohl's and decide to upgrade my existing pot. I had the single serve, dispenser model. I opt for the double wall stainless steel carafe type. Cost $99.

BUT WAIT! This is KOHL'S I'm talking about....

So, it cost $99.99.
Sale price: $89.99
minus my 20% coupon
minus the 15% Senior discount I talk the girl into giving me
minus the $10 Kohl's dollars I got
AND....
the register spits out a manufacturer's rebate: $10 off!

So...original price was $99
my price: $44.86

I LOVE KOHL'S!!!

I went up to get the CT scan done this AM, but really wondered if I was going to make it there, for several reasons. First, the first bottle of the CT scan drink went down smoothly, but then came out just as smoothly. Usually I don't have the runs like that until I come home from the test, but last time and this time, it hit before I even got out the door! I drink the second one en route and fortunately that one stuck until after I got back home, but that first one! WHOOO!

Also, it started POURING when I got on I-95...I mean POURING...and of course the idiots don't slow down at all. Well...sorry! I slow down! They were flying by me, spraying water up over my car! I almost pulled over at an exit and turned around...but no, I plowed on. Saw a good accident at the 95-295 merge....she ran that SUV right up into the woods! I'll bet she had the four wheel drive on and thought that would save her.

Then, when I got into Providence, the damned roads were FLOODED. I mean FLOODED! The water was right across the street and DEEP! And of course the idiots were speeding along, spraying water everywhere.

The CT scan was pretty uneventful after that....except that my vein was pushing so hard it forced the cap off and blood went all over the place. I didn't pay attention...just told her that something was "leaking" and laid back and closed my eyes. I let her clean it up.

Then I went to the main lab at the hospital to have my CA 125 test drawn. They were nice down there...HUGE improvement over the bitches in the outpatient lab at the chemo center. They had some trouble with the vein in my other arm...she said it was "gushing." Dunno why I have such good pressure today. Oh well.

I don't know if I was supposed to go get that special blood test done for the research study...but I deliberately avoided going over there and asking about it. I didn't want to have to deal with the bitches at all today. My little rebellion.

It must be Spring...I got the spring comforter down from the attic and switched it out. Sandy will be pleased when she realizes it. We have been very WARM at night lately.

Sox are in last place, but that will pass...I'm sure of it. WHISTLING....

Jessica is going to bail me out tomorrow...she'll bring a dog for the show and will be on with me, we'll bullshit for an hour. Should be fun!

I have to work on lining up more guests ahead of time!

Later...

Holy Smokes! I haven't been here in ages. Let me see....what has been going on?

Well, we had a wonderful week at Disney World. The accommodations were great, the weather was great (for the most part), the company (Sandy) was fabulous, the food was fantastic and all in all, it was a awesome vacation.

We went to Harry Potter World at Universal Studios one day while we were there. Loved the butterbeer and am looking for a legitimate recipe for it. We don't know how the "head" on the mug lasted so long. The drink was drained to the bottom and yet there was still foam! Unbelievable.

It rained the day we went to HP....we waited over an hour (our longest ride wait of the whole trip) for the "castle" ride. Part of the line was in the downpour. I was so disappointed when we finally got onboard...it was one of those wild, twisting, stomach jarring things....I felt the nausea about a quarter of the way into the ride...when we were flipped on our back and twisted around violently. I closed my eyes, put my foot against Sandy's foot to give me some bearings and hoped for the best. I didn't puke, but it was damned close!

I did have the thought, "I've made it since 1986 and through chemo without puking and now I'm going to lose it on this damned ride?" Fortunately I made it out into the cool, clear air before that happened, but I needed Sandy to help me out!

We enjoyed meals at Disney--the French bistro for lunch of the best french onion soup and best quiche lorraine I have ever had; Canada for filet mignon and maple creme brulee; the Undersea place for some awesome seafood (I'll be damned if I can remember the name of the stuff I had...I'll think of it later, I'm sure)....we were seated right next to the gigantic fish tank and the fish were coming right up to us....fabulous! We even saw a sea turtle in there.

We ate at Emeril Legasse's place in Universal and we enjoyed that. We really ate well all week, it was tough to come home to our plain fare. Good thing we walked so much at Disney, otherwise we would have both gained ten pounds!

Oh we went to Typhoon Lagoon one day. It wasn't too crowded and we found a great place to lounge in the shade, close to everything we were interested in doing. We had fun on the water slides and the wave pool and of course, the "slow float." It was just right...nice and warm and not too humid.

We had a great buffet meal at Animal Kingdom and saw some great animals there....the best being the silver-backed gorilla and babies. The guy who drove our safari ride was a flaming queen and he was hysterical reading the script and camping it up...the tourists laughed and didn't even know what they were laughing about. We did.

While we were gone, Jean stayed here and took care of the dogs/cat/house for us. Of course Truman had to act up, going after Rocky and then Bubbles and got bit in the leg in the process. Jean had to take him to Ocean State (it was a Saturday) and he had to get shaved up again and put on antibiotics...again. What a guy!

Jean was also busy collecting items for the RV...from our house inventory; from her house inventory and from shopping. She proudly showed off the stuff when we got back. We have linens; utensils; dishware; pots and pans; cleaning supplies, even toilet paper! The place is really shaping up.

We are taking it up here this Friday....it will spend the week here as we get it ready for our first trip...next Friday to the Chester Fairgrounds for the SNEAK trial. We are getting so excited for this. Sandy even got the day off from work so we have a three day weekend.

We will be filling the water tanks, water heater and getting the septic system ready. Scary stuff.

I joined a RV online forum and am learning a lot from the folks there. Got an app for my iPhone so I can access the site while we travel and also downloaded an app that has checklists for taking off, setting up, preparing to leave and RV inspections...so much to remember!

Frank has been studying the manuals (as have we) and checking the RV and has come up with ideas for how we can do things easier. He also went out and bought us $100 worth of TOOLS! Fantastic!

I was able to watch the March Madness games (UConn) while we were in Florida and then of course, watched the FF games. I was disappointed for Maya that the women lost, but I wasn't surprised...I had seen how hard Notre Dame played them in the Big East tourney and I knew it wouldn't be easy for them. I was so happy for the guys though, it almost made up for the women's loss. I loved both teams this year...so much fun and so satisfying to have won the national championship.

I'm looking forward to seeing Maya play in the WNBA and I have no doubt that she will do well. Now the Sun have acquired Kalana Greene, one of my favorites...I think they are going to do great things this summer...can't wait!

I go tomorrow for my CT scan...first one since December. I'm a bit nervous about it, given how tired I have been lately, the pains I have felt in my abdomen off an on over the past few months--don't know if they are from the mesh for the hernia or if it's the cancer coming back. Well, I'll find out next week when I see the doctor to get the CT results and the blood work answers.

I haven't been to the gym much as I was getting so wiped out after I worked out. I did reduce my workout routine...and it was better, then we went to Disney. I think Disney wiped me out too...I came home and could hardly move! Getting better every day, so I hope to return to the gym this week, maybe Friday or on the weekend. The weekend I think...Friday is going to be busy.

OH! We went to see the Celts Friday...with Ryan. We had great seats, down low in the corner, just behind the Celts bench. Got to see the team up close as they came in and out of the tunnel from the locker room. Tommy Heinsohn walked right in front of me as did Mike Gorman...it was awesome! And, they won! Every time I have gone to see the Celts they have won. Wish I could say the same about my trips to Sox games....

Speaking of which, the Sox are mounting a comeback vs the Rays right now...I'm going to sign off and watch...

If you are out and about on Easter weekend, come down to the Chester Fairgrounds to see the dogs run agility and I'll give you a tour of the new RV!

Later....

Long time no write. I'm thinking maybe this blog has run it's course....I'll keep posting at least until after my next check-up...which by the way I am having the same old trouble scheduling the CT scan for that visit! I have to stop typing now and call them again....

Okay...I just called...nope they haven't recieved the fax for the order YET! I have been going at this since last WEDNESDAY!! I just texted Sandy and told her that I'm not going to arrange anything...if they want me to have a fucking CT scan, they can call ME!!

There...that made me feel better. I'm sick of people who can't/won't do their fucking jobs.

Speaking of jobs...I've been working....helping the Baton Boys with their tv show, working at UConn...picking up three days next month...and working for sportspage.com....covered the Big East tournament and the CIAC high school championships this weekend. I was supposed to go to UConn yesterday to cover the first round games up there, but I got the diarrhea again Saturday night, spent the night on the potty and was in no shape yesterday to drive anywhere, let alone sit for hours.

I have been piling the weight on again, and I'm not sure I know what that is entirely about. I acknowledge that I have been eating more...but I don't think that would account for all the weight, but I hope that I'm fooling myself. No bloat, so that's a good thing!

Anyway, we are going to Disney and I had to admit that I can't fit into a lot of my clothes from last summer...and the other day I had to go buy some larger sized slacks and jeans. OUCH!
Oh well...if the cancer does come back at least I'll have some pounds to lose before I get into the danger zone! I will have "stores!" Ha haaaaa

We are busy getting ready for Disney. Since we have rented a villa, with two outdoor patios, a king sized bed, queen sized sofa bed, kitchen, laundry, whirlpool and other amenities, we are SUPER PSYCHED! We are packing light...since we can wash clothes if we need to. My bag weighs only 21 lbs! We have purchased the meal plan, which provides lunch and dinner, snacks and drinks, and will go to the store to lay in breakfast supplies. I'm toting a bag of coffee because I can just imagine how much they charge for a bag of coffee at the Disney store! Sandy is bringing her tea...and I have my "tea to go" packs to add to water for my drinks.

We plan to hit the workout room a lot while we are there, to try to get into a routine. Also going to use the pool a lot and go to the water parks a few days. It is going to be 89 down there on Friday, so it should be hot enough for a swim.

We are so excited about this trip, our sixth trip to Disney, but our first trip down there alone. No Jean, Maria, Audge, kids, etc.....we enjoyed those trips, but it will be great to be there alone.

Oh, we are toting our laptops with us this trip...so we can keep up with Cityville...ha ha! Don't want those crops to rot! I'll try to blog our activities every once in awhile. We'll be taking pictures with our iPhones...no toting cameras this time.

We are going to get butter beers at Harry Potter world and I may spring for a wand from Olivanders for Sandy. She could use one I'm sure.

The new RV is safely parked in Jean's driveway. We had one little "incident" when Sandy got the cord for the awning jammed up in the works and we couldn't put it up or down. It was stuck part way open. She agonized over it all night, but the next day we heard that a lot of people with RVs have done similar things with their awnings and we got lots of suggestions. One of them worked. YAY! So now we know what to do.

We took the rig out Friday night to the Crystal Mall. Sandy wanted us to practice driving in parking lots. Well, all she did was drive it to the Mall, pull into two parking spaces (to see how much room it takes up and to see if she could get it between the lines. Then she turned the reins over to me. I too, pulled into a parking spot...coming closer to perfect than she did (polishing my nails now) and then I showed off by driving it down the aisle in the parking lot and making the tight turn at the end of the row into the adjacent row. Sandy was impressed. She did not want to try it.

We are planning our first trip-on Easter weekend to the Chester Fairgrounds for our agility club's trial. We'll park there near our other RV buddies, who will be available to help if we have problems. They expect us to conduct tours of the new "home" and told us they also expect us to make them a lobster dinner! WHAT?!

We are going to get an estimate of how much it will cost to have a paved "pad" put in our yard off the driveway for the RV, so we can keep it here. When we get back from Florida I'll call the guy who did our driveway in Norwich. He did a good job on that and on sealing our current driveway, without gouging us like some of the other guys around here.

We still can't believe that we have the RV...it's like a dream. I think after we take a trip or two it will sink in. And it will be fun.

Okay...I'm going to bite the bullet and call about that damned CT scan again. Wish me luck!

Later!

Winnebago

We traveled out to Warwick yesterday for our driving lesson in the Winnebago. It was a resounding success. Sandy went first, doing turns and back-ups in a commuter lot, then it was my turn. Then Sandy took it out on the road, driving backroads back to Warwick. Then I took it on the highway and then down back roads to the RV place.

It is so comfortable to drive. Our salesman, who's name is Dave Cowen, interesting enough, is a great teacher. I really like him...he's so low key and HONEST!

We made an appt to come back on March 12th for our two hour inservice on all the features and how to operate the slides, jacks, etc. Then we will hook up my car to the RV and drive both of them home!

We talked last night of how long we have been dreaming about this, and now we are doing it. Just as we dreamed of having a bigger yard, all fenced in...now we are getting the RV for the dogs and us, so we can all travel in comfort together.

Jean is already amassing items for the RV, from her "stores" in the basement. While she is here dogsitting for us as we play in Disney, she will go through our stuff and pull out extras. The rest we will shop for at Ocean State-where I have already spotted the Mr. Coffee pot for only $12...a Consumer Reports Best Buy....and other places like that.

I am getting so excited about this...you can't believe. We were hoping to make a trip to Maine in the beginning of May with the RV, but we have yet to find a campground open at that time. Think I'll ask Jack about this...maybe he knows of a place. We were hoping to get something near the water.

I guess the first time we will use it will be at our SNEAK agility trial on Easter Weekend. Can't wait!

Sandy wanted to get everything installed right off the bat, but the satellite dish for our Direct TV was going to cost $2,000! I said NO to that. The guys told us that we didn't need it...we could just use the installed digital antenna to pick up local stations. I reminded Sandy that we didn't need a tv anyway...we never watch tv when we are camping, we have the DVD player already installed (right in with the AM/FM/CD player) and we have our iPhones for the internet, to get the news, weather, etc. We are going to be "camping" in style!

Of course, just as we are purchasing this rig, gas prices go up! Well, they can't stay up and now that we find out we can't tow the Highlander, the Camry hybrid will help offset some gas prices!

I hate to say it, but if Lily were still alive, a lot of this would be so much more difficult. With the three little dogs, it's so much easier. Their kennels will fit on the dinette benches and can be seatbelted in place. Their folding kennels take up very little space. And it's easy to fit them in my car and still have room for three adults, if we stack two kennels and put one on the floor (Rocky or Bub) or have two stacked and one next to them. It's just easier, that's all I'm saying.

Today I'm going over to Marci Pillsbury's to visit with her and Pauline. Haven't seen Pauline in some time...it should be fun, and interesting, as always. I was supposed to see Grace for dinner tomorrow night, but she has a bad cold, so we are going to hold off on that for a bit. Hope to have some of that pizza I've heard about at that new place in Gales Ferry.

Oh, speaking of new places...Bob and I went to lunch last week at the new barbecue place in Putnam...Grampy's Barbecue on Providence Street and was it GOOD! We had the pulled pork sandwiches, delish! The guy told me that he was in touch with Food Network...guess they are interested in coming out to video. So, now I have a barbecue source when I head up Putnam way. Too bad we don't have one here in central Eastern CT.

The newspaper article was finally in the paper yesterday and aside from a few errors, she did a pretty good job. The one thing I gasped over was her referencing Sandy as my "wife." I don't like that. It's okay if other people want to use that term, but for us it's not right. We say "partner" or now, "spouse" and that's how it's going to stay.

Okay, time to get ready for Pauline and pizza!

GO HUSKIES!!!!

Sorry I haven't updated this blog...I guess I'm running out of steam, at least as far as this site.

Things have calmed down considerably since my last post. Truman got his stitches out yesterday and Dr. Gamble is very pleased and surprised at how well he has healed. Rocky continues to get his eye drops daily, but his eyes are looking really good. No permanent damage.

We have ascertained that they were attacked (or they attacked) a fisher cat. Sandy took a picture of the track and Deb Saunders husband, who is a big tracker, looked at the photo. He said that it was a male fisher. WOW! Just what we suspected, but when you hear it confirmed...well, it makes your blood run cold.

A fisher attack is something we have feared for many years, ever since that woman told me about spotting one running across Lawler Lane, near our old house. We knew that we had one in the woods behind this house too and we've always been on the look-out. Now, our dogs get into it with the fisher and I'm right there and hear and see NOTHING! WOW!

I am the one with residual problems from the "incident"...still can't feel my ring finger, have tendonitis in my knee and elbow from the fall, my bursitis acted up due to my shoulder being jammed in the fall and now I'm housebound with diarrhea due to the antibiotic that I had to take for the cut in my hand from Truman snapping at me.

I want and need to get back in the gym, and now I can't because I'm afraid I'll aggravate the tendonitis more. Damn...I am piling the weight on and it needs to come off!

Right now I have Truman and Rocky all snuggled up to me on the recliner. Truman actually put his head on Rocky the other night and slept that way, on Sandy's lap. He hasn't done that in years when he was a puppy and would snuggle up to Lily. I think he appreciates the help Rocky gave him in the fight with the fisher. We figure that Rocky probably saved Truman's live, by jumping into the fight. I'm sure Bubby did her bit too...probably circling around behind the fisher, nipping from the rear. That's how they fight, two at the front and one in the back.

Saturday I went out to Providence College to cover the UConn vs PC game for sportspagemagazine.com My first assignment in over a year. It was fun being back there, got to see Geno, Maya and Stephanie up close and personal in the media room. UConn pasted the Friars, of course. I managed to write an article that was just the right amount of words, for the first time ever! It was the headline story on the website the next day. WOO HOO!

Sunday, Roxie, Ryan, Andrew and I headed up to Boston for the Celtics game. We were smart and ate lunch at the roadside rest area heading into Boston, much cheaper than eating at the game. We had some trouble finding a parking area that had openings...but we finally did, hiked two blocks to the TD Center and got in just before tip-off. We were still hiking the concourse to our section when we heard them honoring Ray Allen at center court....I dragged them into the nearest section and we stood there and cheered for Ray. AWESOME!

The game was great....the Celts were behind at the half, but you knew they would come back in the third quarter...which they did. Then they blew their 14 point lead in the fourth and just won it in the last few seconds of the game. So exciting...we were so thrilled to see this game.

Yesterday I got up and out to the studio only to find that both of the shows that I was supposed to be working for were canceled and they didn't let me know. So, I made the very best of that situation by going over to Lazizah for lunch...and hit the jackpot....chicken pot pie soup!

I texted Sandy to let her know that I would be able to go with her and the dogs to the vet clinic...we would be able to be together for Valentine's Day after all!

When I got home, though, the diarrhea hit again and I couldn't get out of the bathroom to save me. I had to beg off the trip with Sandy and remained ensconced on the throne for most of the time she was gone. I watched the Husky game, shut off the tv and was in bed at 9:30....reading my biography of Bobby Fischer for awhile and then falling asleep mid paragraph.

Sandy had reminded me to drink my G2 and that helped a lot. I'm keeping the diet very bland and that and the G2 are working, I think. I'm going to lay low for a few days, snuggle with the still recuperating puppies and get in shape for my trip to see Bob Miller on Friday. We are going to go through some of his boxes and sort things out....and visit.

I'm going to see if he has a working boom box so he can listen to opera. Hmmmm...maybe I'll get him a little MP3 player and load it up with opera...he can put the head phones on and not disturb Wini...and maybe he can hear it. I'll bring my iPod and headphones and see if he can hear that. YAY...I just got a good idea!

Okay, now I have to play CityVille, read my email and then get back to Bobby Fischer, a genius and genuine psycho.

Later!

Monday, February 7, 2011

I finally have something interesting to write about. I'm sitting here with a medicated, injured dog on my lap, Truman is on his way to the vet's with Sandy, and I have three stitches in my left palm a huge hematoma on my right butt cheek, I can't feel two fingers on my left hand and my left arm is killing me!

I will go back to Friday. Sandy was home from work, her mini-vacation started Friday. We had a quiet day, we dropped her car off at Toyota at 8:00 AM to have the tow stuff installed. Then I ran her back home and I zipped off to the gym for my hour session with the personal trainer.

I went over to Lazizah after the work-out and got lunch and goodies. That shit is going to have to stop I'll tell you, I'm putting on weight like crazy...but that's another story. Suffice it to say that the chicken tortellini soup and chicken salad was awesome...but those pastries are my downfall!

In the late afternoon Jean and Frank came up to get us to go to Ryan's bball game in Woodstock. I decided to stay home. I felt tired already from the gym and not getting to bed early the night before. So, Sandy left with them and I decided to feed the birds, before I got in the recliner to veg out.

I let the dogs out to chase a squirrel that had been eating the suet on the deck. They all took off barking and I went to the cellar to get the bird seed. When I came out the cellar door I heard something banging on the wooden gate in the little yard. I looked and could see Rocky through the slats of the fence. It looked like he was digging in the snow near the gate. I didn't think anything of it.

As I filled the feeders near the fence I could hear that same sound occasionally, still not suspicious. I moved further down in the yard to fill those feeders and noted that I hadn't seen Bubbles and Truman. I stopped and looked around the yard, no sign of them. Hmmm....then I forgot about that as I slid on the ice. I concentrated more on my feet and making my way around the yard to the other feeders. I didn't want to fall, get hurt and not be able to get help as Sandy was gone.

At the feeders near the big pole feeder I ran out of seed. I knew there was no more in the cellar, I had scraped the bottom of the barrel there when I filled the bucket to take outside. So I made my way to the garage, where there were two new bags of seed I had purchased that morning on my way home from the gym.

As I came into the little fenced-in portion of the yard I saw, with horror, three Jack Russells absolutely covered with blood! I banged on the empty bucket to get their attention and to drive away whatever they were fighting with and called them to me. Truman came towards me, staggering and looking glassy-eyed...then he keeled over in the snow. I thought he was dying.

I bent down to pick him up and he snapped at me, raking my palm with one of those beautiful titanium teeth he has. The pain was tremendous! As they say "on a scale of 1-10, it was a 10"...I sank to my knees in the snow.

All through this I'm yelling things like "What the hell? and Oh My God! and What The Hell again." It would have been an interesting experience for the neighbors if they had been out and about to hear it. Too bad, they lose.

I called the dogs to come in the house. Rocky and Bubbles came right along, I had to lift Truman by his collar with my (now) bad hand and kind of push him from the rear with the other hand. He wasn't walking well at all and kept staggering. I was really afraid for him and afraid of him at the same time. I knew I needed Sandy to help me with him as he would not trust anyone else.

I got them in the house and went looking frantically for my cell phone. I don't have Sandy's cell number memorized and this was one of those times I was kicking myself for that. I found my cell in my car, Rocky following me out the door.

Truman stood, swaying, by the pantry door, where I had left him. I got a towel and coaxed him into Lily's old bed, where he lay, looking horrible.

I got Sandy on the phone and told her, somewhat incoherently, what happened. As I told her I realized I had NO IDEA what had happened. I got it in my head that Rocky and Truman had been fighting each other and that thought drove me nuts.

Then I told myself to calm down. I wiped Bubby down with a wet paper towel and checked her for injuries. She seemed to be fine...just had blood on her. I wiped Rocky a bit, but he kept bleeding. Some blood came off, but new blood appeared. I refused to touch Truman, I knew if I did I would get hurt again.

I didn't blame Truman for snapping at me, it was obvious that he was badly hurt and in a lot of pain. He was definitely in shock and I talked quietly to him, bundled him in the towel...and went off to gather first aid supplies.

But first I got an ice pack on my hand. It was already swelling and I couldn't feel my ring finger. The blood was soaking through anything I put on it, so I just decided not to worry about the blood.

After I had checked Rocky and Bub I called Sandy back and gave her my assessment of the injuries, Truman being the worst-with leg injuries (he was holding one foreleg out to the side and couldn't put weight on it). I told her that it was a serious situation here...I didn't want her to think I was just hysterical and it was nothing.

Later she told me that she had told her parents that it was probably nothing too much to worry about, she would clean the dogs up and then get going to the basketball game. I'm sure the next time I call her home because someone has been injured, she will take me seriously.

She walked in an freaked out. She took Truman out to show her folks and tell them she wouldn't be coming to the game. No duh. She got them up in "my bathroom"...the one with the tub and washed them up so we could check their injuries.

Rocky had blood on the top of his neck and he didn't want to open his left eye. He had a slit inside his ear that was bleeding profusely and other little cuts on his other ear.

Truman had punctures on both sides of his left leg, his nose was bleeding and he had blood on his neck and ears.

Sandy asked me to go outside and look for a "body" so we could have some idea of what they had tangled with...although both of us agreed that the two boys COULD have been fighting with each other. There had been some growling going on between the two of them at the door before I let them out.

I looked over the deck and could only see blood spatters all over the snow next to the gate, which is what I had seen when I first came into the little yard. Then I went to go down off the deck and around in the yard to look around. At the top of the stairs I slipped on the ice and went down hard on my butt. Then I slid down the stairs to the sidewalk, hitting both elbows on the stairs and further insulting my butt. I remember thinking "don't hit your head" as I felt it snapping back. I knew I was going to have to drive us to the animal hospital and I couldn't afford to get a concussion.

Still I managed to make it down into the yard and checked around the area...no sign of any animal. No fur, no body...no nothing.

Sandy looked way down at the back gate before we left...she thought that was the gate I was referring to...and saw blood on the snow down there and some drops leading back toward the house. She supposed that is where the animal got away.

Meanwhile I wasn't so sure it was another animal...I was thinking more and more that the two dogs had been fighting each other and the thought was making me ill.

We went over and over what happened as we drove to Rhode Island....to Ocean State Animal Hospital. I remembered that there was no barking or whining...when the Russells go after each other there is always snarling, barking, etc. When they hunt they go silent. So that was a clue.

I just want to stop here and comment: I can't tell you how eerie it is to have relative quiet in your yard and come around a corner to find your three beloved pets covered in blood, staggering and falling and looking the way they did. It shook me to the core.

Maybe I should post the next chapter of this saga tomorrow....keep you hanging...

We got to Ocean State, they rushed Truman in and gave him pain killers and sedated him. They had to knock him out completely, intubate him and he was back in Sandy's arms four hours later, with five drains in him. Two on that bad leg, one on each side of his neck (where the critter had tried to rip his throat out) and one some where else, I'm not sure where. The wounds on his leg and neck were puncture wounds and were deep enough to be worrisome. He had several "needle-like" wounds on the back of his neck.

None of these wounds were like dog bites...so they weren't made by Rocky, thankfully!

And Rocky's wounds were not consistent with the damage Truman could do with those damned metal teeth. We could not imagine Rocky inflicting that kind of damage to Truman and Truman being "gentle" in his attack on Rocky...if the two of them HAD been fighting each other, the wounds would have been worse on Rocky.

Rocky had small punctures on the back of his neck...more like scrapes. He had the slash inside his ear...and he had a cut in the conjunctiva of his left eye...but no corneal scratches. He came home with pain pills and eye drops.

We are now convinced it was a fisher cat. I had heard one in the woods a couple of weeks ago in the night....very scary sounding screams. Mark heard one just this morning a couple of houses up the road from us. We figure it got in by jumping over the fence out back. The snow is so high around the fence now that critters can get over it easily.

We have been researching fisher cats on line and see that they come into yards for suet. Well, we have noticed strange tracks in the yard lately and the suet has been disappearing a lot faster than usual. I thought it was all the squirrels who have been coming in lately because they can't reach the stuff they buried before the snow and ice came.

Gina, a friend who lives in Maine, has Jack Russells and who is a vet tech with a lot of experience seeing fisher cat victims says that if there is a lot of damage sustained to the dogs and no body to show for their efforts, it is most likely a fisher cat. They fight hard and get away. They are ferocious and are to be feared. We have worried about fisher cats for years, ever since one was spotted in our old neighborhood in Norwich.

The house was very quiet Saturday as Rocky was not his usual barky self. Truman lay on Sandy's lap all day, bundled up. He didn't want to eat initially, but she got him to drink a little and take a little bit of food. I took advantage of the peace and calm to run down to the ER to get stitches put in my hand.

As I write this, Rocky is bundled under the blanket on my lap. Bubbles is snuggled up to him. I just gave him his antibiotics and put the drops in his eyes. Truman is on his way to our vet's office to get the drains removed. The warm compresses and the drains have worked, stuff has been coming out of his wounds the way it should.

Truman is much perkier today...he actually wagged his tail when he saw me come in from the doctor's office this morning. He can walk around the yard to pee and poop and Sandy caught him getting up on a snow bank this morning and starting to frisk around!

The vet called yesterday and was shocked at how well the two of them were doing. Sandy had to remind her of how tough Jack Russells are. The vet doubted that a fisher cat had been involved...she thought the damage would have been much worse...in fact she thought both dogs would be dead. We don't think she gives enough credit to JRTs! Gina told us about a JRT that had a fisher cat get into it's kennel and the JRT killed the fisher cat! They are mighty tough dogs.
We do believe that Truman was in the forefront of the fight and Rocky probably saved his life by being involved in the fight also. The cat took off rather than continue to fight both of them. I never saw the cat...but it could have gone around the other way while I was coming up the path. And we think Bub must have gotten some licks in too. They hunt well together...one up front while the others come in from the sides or sneak around back. I'll bet the cat had it's back to the gate and that's what I heard...it's body thumping on the gate.

It was a very exciting weekend...we are hoping we have no more like that...ever.

And I still can't feel my ring finger.
